Let’s see what you can find guys. The best Malaise car you can find, and the Most Malaise one.
For best I’ve got this 77 Caprice Landau Coupe. I’ve never seen one of these, but I dig it
Most Malaise tho. This dreamcicle Mustang II... with a 4 banger and 3 speed auto .

The Mustang II is always peak malaise, but that Caprice coupe is kind of... Cool?

Hmm, I really don’t like American cars of this era in general but let me do this:
Best:
1981 Corvette - 4 speed manual $12500 (Rowley)
Not the fastest, but damn pretty
Worst:
1979 Mercury Marquis Broughm $1
Combine ugly with an Amazing 129HP V8 in a heavy car.
Alternatively, you could go with this basket-case:
‘78 Mercury Zepher - RESTORE $1 (Arlington)
That will get you an Amazing 89HP, but if cleaned up would probably look a bit cooler (plus there’s a doggo in the picture), so it can only be a runner up.
Also as an aside, the wikipedia page for Malaise E ra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaise_era (I wanted to get a definitive date range), claims that the term originated from Jalopnik, but that seems unlikely to me? The whole article is a mess of [citation need] and the like though.

I was attempting to do this challenge until I got distracted by this cheap rusty square body https://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/d/wayne-1980-chevrolet-stepside-pickup/6982396200.html

I know right. Looks like it would be the D etective’s car if someone made a Nior film set in the 70’s. Stylish but subtle.

Well yeah, that’s why it’s a challenge to find the best and worst ones, because they are all so mediocre

Hmm, the Tempo is certainly not the best car, but I would call it post-Malaise.

That’s a mess of a Wikipedia article.
Murilee Martin coined the term in his writings across various websites, and eventually made the term common among automotive descriptors.
Funny enough that the Wiki article mentions random sources, all except for the one documenting its origin.
